Home Port of John Paul Jones, the founder of the US Navy, home town of President George Washingtons father and one of the leading ports in the early and lucrative American Trading routes.

Lowther Street - the main thouroufare through the town which hosts several shops and quality cafes of interest. It's also the main banking street in the town. The Rum Story Tourist attraction is about 100m from the harbour front on this street. You will also find the lovely gardens of St. Nic's church. The gardens are bordered by Church Street and Queen Street, each also hosting small selections of shops. Queen Street - One of the longest streets in the town, Queen Street intersects with Duke Street, Lowther Street, Roper Street and the Market and if you walk the length of it, you take in two of Whitehavens gem areas, St. Nic's Gardensand Washington Square. There are a small number of specialists shops along it's length and at the intersection between itself and Lowther Street, you can enjoy a lovely coffe in the Westminster Cafe. Church Street - A quiet street running parallel with Queen Street and enjoying the view of St. Nics at it's Northern end. Duke Street - Another steet of independent shops and also the main taxi street in the town.
King Street - The main pedestrianised shopping street hosting a number of local traders and national names.
Roper Street - accessed off the market or King Street South, it would be easy to miss but a terrible shame to do so. A small number of independent traders flourish on this street, as does the Whitehaven News which can be found on the junction of Roper Street and Queen Street.
The Market/James Street - Whitehaven has had a thriving market for many years offering everything from cuts of meat to tools and fashions. The Market area laso boasts a lovely selection of shops ranging from specialist computer accessories to gifts and even two traditional butchers. Strand Street - Running parallel to the Harbour front and linking to all the main feeder roads in the town, Strand Street is well worth walking along just to head to Vanilla, near the market. Castle Park - Whitehaven Castle, now converted into stunning apartments is set in several acres of woodland and lawns which are a lovely setting for a walk. They also house a play area for children. Tangier Street - Tangier Street is a nice quiet Street during the day but it really comes to life at night. Supporting a good selection of pubs and eating establishments and will easy access onto the harbour.
